The Society of the Illuminated Quill

The Society of the Illuminated Quill, founded in 2006, is not a Masonic body, but is probably of great interest to Freemasons as it facilitates a long held tradition favored by many prominent Masons of the past. It is a society of Ritual Writers, colloquially referred to as Riters, who publish a periodical journal containing their original work and provide each other with peer review. In areas where enough members exist, these original rituals may be exemplified or "rehearsed" and refined. The riters also strive to achieve rediscovery and renewed use of ritual as a teaching technique in a broad context of settings in modern society.

The Society embraces a diverse variety of ritual, but operates by rules to ensure that ritual texts submitted for peer review do not infringe upon the rites of any existing group and also prohibits inclusion of ritual that would tend to corrupt morals as well as ritual which constitutes a religion. These rules exist so that members of any religious persuasion (or none at all) may interact comfortably in this work.
