The Lodge is in mourning over the Death of Hiram Abiff and the loss of the Word. Adonhiram was appointed chief of the work in Hiram's place, and Azariah was set over the tribute in place of Adonhiram. This created a vacancy among the Seven Princes of Israel, which was filled by Jeroboam. In this Degree, the Candidate is made a Prince in imitation of Jeroboam.
In this Degree, the Candidate's attention is drawn to the Holy of Holies, and he is given a key which he is told may some day unlock the gate to the Most Secret Mysteries of Masonry.
Reading: Deuteronomy 23:21-23.
Adonhiram and Zabud preside over a unique memorial service to the memory of Hiram Abiff. His virtues are extolled, and as his Representative, the candidate is admonished to live up to his standard.
Reading: Exodus 19:5-6.
Hiram, King of Tyre is dissatisfied with the twenty cities given to him by Solomon, and comes to settle the dispute. Zabud, one of King Solomon's Guards fears that Solomon is in danger, and watches from the door in case his assistance becomes necessary. He is caught and declared an eavesdropper. However, when it is determined that his intentions were in the best interests of his Sovereign, he is appointed a Confidential Secretary to help draw up a new Treaty between King Solomon and King Hiram of Tyre.
Reading: 1 Kings 9:10-14
King Solomon appoints seven Provosts and Judges to settle the disputes among the workmen of the Temple.
The candidate is taught the principles of equality, justice, accuracy, and impartiality, and admonished to live according to the law so that he may be able to serve as a Provost and Judge without hypocrisy.
Reading: 2 Chronicles 19:5-7
The work on the Temple must be continued, but no workman is available with skill and qualities equal to Hiram Abiff. It is decided to appoint five of Hiram's favored pupils as Intendants of the Building so that each one may carry out a portion of the work that Hiram once performed.
